FAQs

What’s the difference between Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Treaty of Waitangi?

Te Tiriti o Waitangi was written in te reo Māori and agreed by Māori rangatira and the Crown in 1840. It guaranteed that the tino rangatiratanga Māori had always held would not be disturbed. The Treaty of Waitangi was written in English and introduced the idea of the Crown having sovereignty over all people in Aotearoa. This is something that was never discussed or agreed. Our workshops focus on what was actually agreed, and why that matters today.

Who are the workshops for?

We work with workplaces, schools, boards, councils, government departments, and community organisations across Aotearoa. Whether your team is completely new to Te Tiriti or already on the journey, we have something for all. The sessions are designed to be clear, factual, and welcoming, free of assumptions and judgement.

How long is the workshop?

Each session runs for about two hours.

Do participants need to prepare anything?

No preparation is needed. We meet your team where they are. You just book, show up, and be ready to learn together.

Does the workshop help us meet our Te Tiriti obligations?

Yes! Our workshops help organisations understand their obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, strengthen cultural competency, and take meaningful steps towards genuine partnership. The workshops are educational only and do not constitute legal advice or confirmation of compliance. Instead, we provide the understanding that makes true alignment possible in your everyday mahi.

Where are the workshops held?

We deliver workshops in person at your premises anywhere in Aotearoa. Contact us to check availability for your region.

Who delivers the workshop?

Each workshop is created and delivered personally by Roimata Smail, a human-rights lawyer, educator, and bestselling author of Understanding Te Tiriti.

Roimata brings two decades of Te Tiriti and human-rights expertise, making complex ideas accessible, engaging, and empowering.

Can the workshop be tailored for our organisation?

The workshop is designed to work well for all kinds of organisations, from schools and councils to companies and community groups, because it focuses on clear, evidence based information which naturally fits across sectors.

If your team would like to explore what the learning means in your specific context, you can add the optional Reflection + Kōrero session. This relaxed follow up kōrero helps your group make direct connections to your organisations' strategy and everyday mahi, continuing the conversation in a way that is relevant to you. How much does it cost?

Each two hour workshop is an investment of $3900 + GST for up to 50 participants.

Smaller organisations often co-host with one or more others to get the best per person value. This format keeps costs accessible while delivering a powerful shared learning experience.
